Similar specs to ExpressVPN- cheaper price
NordVPN is another great premium VPN service that we highly recommend if you’re looking to protect your activities online. They’re pretty similar to ExpressVPN, using the exact same 256-bit data encryption. Nord, like ExpressVPN, also have a strict ‘no logging’ policy- so your data is hidden from everybody, including the company themselves. You can trust that with NordVPN, cyber criminals won’t be getting anywhere near your info.
The service is compatible with Netflix- but to slightly less of an extent than ExpressVPN (you’re still able to stream Netflix from overseas, there’s just fewer server options). Using their SmartPlay feature, you’ll be able to access over 400 geo-restricted streaming services, such as Amazon Prime, Pandora, Hulu and BBC iPlayer. You’ll never be stuck for what to watch again.NordVPN is also compatible with UTorrent- taking the privacy risk out of downloading/sharing pirated content online. Nord even has special ‘p2p’ servers which are specifically designed for file sharing, and run really efficiently too.

NordVPN is our recommendation if you are looking for a "cheap" VPN, their prices currently start at $2.99/month and they offer over 5000 servers to choose from.
NordVPN also has a whole host of advanced VPN tools, such as the kill switch (which we discussed earlier), protection from data leaks, and double data protection. Double data protection means sending your data through two VPN servers rather than one- encrypting your data two times. This is a good tool to have if you want added privacy- but only if you need it. If you’re simply streaming and torrenting- there’s no need to turn on Double Data Protection. DDP reduces your download speeds, so it’s only worth using it when it’s really necessary.
To check for data leaks, we set our location to a US server and used 5 different sites that are designed for finding leaks. The websites we used were IPLeak.net, Perfect-Privacy.com, Browserleaks.com and IPC.ax. No data leaks were found, which is exactly what you want from a VPN software.
Customer service at NordVPN is great- which is just what you’d expect for one of the most popular companies out there. They have 24/7 customer support live chat. If you’re reading this article, you’re probably new to the VPN world- so having technical support on hand within a matter of minutes will be really helpful for you. Unfortunately- sometimes the customer support reps will send copy-paste answers, so are only really helpful for smaller problems. To get in-depth tech support- you’ll have to email email@example.com, which will take a little longer for a response. NordVPN have a huge library of over 500 guides and tutorials, which are very useful to refer to in a pinch.
NordVPN is a little cheaper than ExpressVPN, so if you’re looking to save a few pounds without compromising much on your overall experience, NordVPN may be the best option for you. The cheaper price doesn’t come at much cost- NordVPN actually surpasses ExpressVPN in server options- offering 5000 rather than the 2000 offered by their competitor.
Speed (Good, but not the best)
The downfall with NordVPN in comparison to ExpressVPN is the download speed. While ExpressVPN boasts download speeds of up to 83.15 Mbps, NordVPN is a little slower. When testing NordVpn on a 100mbps capable internet connection- the download speed came out at 74.14 Mbps on average. From our offices in Europe- we speed tested various NordVPN servers and here were our results.
• Ping: 101ms
• Download: 56Mbps
• Upload: 28Mbps
• Ping: 37ms
• Download: 74Mbps
• Upload: 48Mpbs
While NordVPn’s servers aren’t as quick as ExpressVPN- they’re still really good, especially for the price. As you can see- server speed varies greatly depending on how far your data has to travel. The longer it needs to travel, the slower download speeds become. Overall, NordVpn’s speed tests showed amazing results.
The way most VPN companies conduct business can be worrying to some people. While NordVPN is based in the jurisdiction of Panama- payments are sent to CloudCPN Inc- located in the US. This may seem sketchy and can put a lot of people off investing in the service. There is a reason, however- for company privacy. As discussed earlier when talking about ExpressVPN- company privacy is also in the best interest of your own personal privacy. NordVPN have made this statement in regards to their activity.
‘First, NordVPN and all the infrastructure we use is being run by Tefincom S.A. and operates under the jurisdiction of Panama.
CloudVPN is used only as a payment collector in order to improve the acceptance rate, as banks are suspicious towards transactions made to Panama and tend to complicate or terminate such payments. It’s a simple and common practice.’
Refund waiting time
Like their competitor- NordVPN offers a 30-day money back guarantee. The problem is that some customers have reported the refund taking 30 days to process. This isn’t the best customer service and can be a problem if you need your money back asap. Hopefully, with NordVPN being one of the best VPN services out there- you won’t need to experience this system.
As I’ve said before, NordVPN is slightly cheaper than their major competitor- ExpressVPN. For their monthly and 6 monthly plans- the price is very similar. However, when you get down to their 1 and 3-year plans, they’re extremely cheap- costing as little as $35.88 (around 27.15) a year. Here are their pricing plans:
Monthly: $11.95/mo (around £9.04)
6-month: $9.00/mo (around £6.81)
1-year: $6.99/mo (around £5.29)
3-years: $2.99/mo (around £2.26)
Both NordVPN and ExpressVPN have their pricing set up in US dollars. Not to worry, though- you can pay with your British Debit card, and the exchange rate will be automatically sorted out for you. With both services, you can also pay with alternative means such as Paypal, Klarna and even Bitcoin if you want to stay anonymous. NordVPN is very reasonably priced for the amount of service they offer. It’s an investment worth making to protect all of your personal and financial information.
We’re putting NordVPN as our 2nd top software pick. You can’t get much better than Nord, and you’ll certainly not regret using their service.
